World-leading semiconductor manufacturer is expanding with 125 jobs in Frederikssund
Topsil, a Danish company founded in 1959 and acquired by GlobalWafers from Taiwan in 2016, is announcing a major expansion initiative within Denmark, resulting in the creation of 125 new jobs in Frederikssund. Renowned as a global leader in supplying ultrapure silicon for the semiconductor industry, Topsil GlobalWafers is committed to fostering innovation and meeting the growing demand for advanced and energy-efficient power components.
The expansion focuses on increasing the production of Topsil GlobalWafers’ float zone 200 mm silicon wafers, a crucial component utilized in various applications such as energy transmission in wind turbines, power grids, frequency converters in motors, electricity generation in high-speed trains, photodetectors for medical imaging, and within the field of quantum computing.
The expansion not only reinforces the company's commitment to the green transition but also underscores the company's dedication to sustainability, innovation, and job creation within the region. By adding 125 new positions, Topsil GlobalWafers contributes to the growth of Frederikssund and the broader Danish economy.
This expansion is in line with the EU Chips Act that aims to bolster the semiconductor manufacturing across Europe with the objective to improve supply-chain autonomy in the longer term. Furthermore, the Danish government’s decision to actively support the semiconductor industry in Denmark through new competency centres, R&D alliances, and production capacity building, will increase the opportunities for further investments and expansion opportunities for Topsil GlobalWafers in Denmark.
”We are thrilled to announce this significant expansion that will not only boost Topsil GlobalWafers capabilities but also contribute to the economic development of Frederikssund and Denmark as a whole. This expansion aligns with our vision of being at the forefront of technological advancements and supporting our global partners in creating a more sustainable future,"
- Hans Peder Mikkelsen, President of Topsil GlobalWafers.
Copenhagen Capacity and Invest in Denmark have played an important role in supporting Topsil GlobalWafers, providing insights to strengthen the Danish business case. This collaboration will continue into the next phase of R&D and future production at the Frederikssund site.
“We are proud that such an advanced company as GlobalWafers is seeing Frederikssund and the Greater Copenhagen Region as a sweet spot for further expansion and development of the future of semiconductors. It is key elements in the continued green transition, and we see great example of synergies with the strong cleantech sector in Denmark. We are happy to continue our support to the company in their future endeavours in this region.”
